Research a KIA WWI Veteran
We offer access to WWI burial files which are maintained at the U.S. National Archives. WWI burial files are an important tool for researching WWI veterans who were killed or who died in the service during the Great War. This is especially true since the vast majority of WWI military service records were destroyed in the 1973 fire. WWI burial files were not involved in the fire and thus offer the exciting opportunity to reconstruct portions of the WWI veteran’s service history. When a veteran was killed or died in the service during WWI a burial case file was created to preserve a record of the burial location and disposition of his remains. The creation of the WWI burial file often generated paperwork describing how the veteran died (sometimes there are actual eye witness accounts in the WWI burial file indicating how the WWI veteran was killed). Additionally, during the creation of the WWI burial file there was often written correspondence between the family of the deceased veteran and the military, and these original documents were placed in the WWI burial file. The WWI burial file is an essential record for anyone conducting research of a WWI veteran who died in the service and it can provide a wealth of information to genealogical researchers.
